We Love Our Artisans
We love to judge a book by its cover and to keep endangered arts and crafts relevant, taking every opportunity to commission local craftsmen to bring beauty into our daily lives.
In his studio on the periphery of Perugia is Giuliano Foca, a bookbinder still using the same techniques employed in the 15th century. Using only natural vegetable pigments he hand dabs to colour the leather, then, using traditional tools, much as in ancient days, he locks the spine to create strength and decoration, adding the pages and endpapers using a water-based glue. Finally, when the book is complete, Giuliano uses a time-honoured blocking method to apply the gold leaf to the embossed letters and our Guest Book is ready for signatures.
